Where does English Language Learners (ELL) begin their venture to becoming ideal students? Who will be able to recognize the cry of the student that thirsts for a average chance at being the best that he or she can be? An ELL is one who has to master a opposed actors line epoch trying to grasp the basic impression of a subject area class. The naturalise the child attends should be responsible for ensuring the quality education that the ELL receives. However, ELLs face several challenges while trying to receive an education; some include: receiving spurn grades, being judged by teachers because they run through lower academic abilities, and scoring lower on standardize reading and math tests (Moss & Puma, 1995). some other challenge that the ELLs have is the loss of identity, friends, and culture.

According to Education weeks 2009 Quality Counts, researchers have found that the high school drop-out rate for English learners is three times that of native English speakers. With that being said, one of the challenges ELLs face is receiving low grades.



Recently, a data showed that about one-third of all English Language Learners in grades 6-12 in New York City are considered to be long-term English language learners (New York City Department of Education, 2008). These are the ELLs who have been in the United States schools for more than seven years. These students attend heart and high schools across the United States. Because of the high numbers of English language learners, these students tend to be the ones that go unnoticed. This causes them to do disadvantageously and receive low grades. Eventually, they will be labeled as failures. If educators would take the time to understand the characteristics and needs of the English language learners, schools can do a better job of breeding them.
